About the Day & History

Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now AstraZeneca). The original mission was to promote mammography as the most effective tool for early detection.

Since then, it has grown into a global health campaign. The most recognizable symbol—the pink ribbon—was first used in 1991 by the Susan G. Komen Foundation during a New York City race for breast cancer survivors. By the mid-1990s, the pink ribbon had become the universal emblem of breast cancer awareness.

Today, October serves as a time to:

  • Educate people about prevention and early detection.

  • Support survivors and those currently fighting.

  • Raise funds for research and treatment.

  • Honor loved ones lost to the disease.

It’s both deeply personal and powerfully communal—uniting millions of people worldwide under a common cause.
